Being a corporate responsiblity/sustainability expert and a style enthusiast at the same time, e c c o * e c o has been one of my favorite blogs for a long time now. Writer and environmental fiber artist, Abigail Doan blogs about sustainable fashion, textile expressions, cruelty-free designs and many other interesting topics covering responsible solutions to the global challenges we all face. I love her blog(s) as much as I love her art- no wonder I was super excited that she agreed to a interview so I can introduce her, her views on sustainability and her art to you. It was such a great pleasure to read Abigail's thoughtful and wise answers- I hope you enjoy this interview just as much as I did.

Abigail, "lost in fiber"

Abigail, first of all, I know you do a lot of things - tell me, what is your background?

I am an environmental fiber/textile artist by profession but I also write about ecological innovation and fashion. I grew up on a small family farm in the United States, but I now live between NYC, Eastern Europe, and Italy. My husband was born in Europe, so we decided to live between these three places so that our children have exposure to the rich culture and landscapes.

I started writing online as a way to organize my thoughts about sustainable fashion, textiles, and the role of aesthetics in creative problem solving. Blogging is a great way for me to sustain a community and dialogue with like-minded people wherever I travel.

What are you wearing right now? Who/what is your style inspiration?

I am currently in Sofia, Bulgaria, where the days are hot and sunny, so I have been wearing my assortment of organic cotton slips and dresses by designer friend, Kee Edwards of Loup Charmant. I am fortunate to have a lot of extremely talented friends who are involved in sustainable fashion and organic fiber work, so I never run out of ideas for style inspiration. I look to a mix of vintage and innovative textile designs for my closet picks. I love Dutch design and try to support handcraft initiatives of all varieties. My summer jewelry consists of lightweight "golden grass" bangles made by Brazilian artisans at Aurea Golden Grass as well as colorful striped wedges from TOM’s Shoes. I really like to keep things simple and fresh in the summertime, as so much about looking and feeling healthy is about being light in atttidude. I am a bit partial to women artists in history as my style icons. Trailblazers like Louise Bourgeois, Georgia O’Keefe, Louise Nevelson, and American artists who lived and worked in Europe earlier this century are figures I am fascinated by at the moment. All had such timeless style and a system for fashioning themselves that really complimented their creative investigations.

I know that you are dedicated to sustainable living. How do you see the fashion world with that in mind? Are we getting there or is there a lot to do?

The fashion world itself has a long way to go in terms of sustainability. The whole concept of "sustainable fashion" is by nature paradoxical. I do not like to preach any sort of style or fashion doctrine to anyone, as I really feel that if someone has the luxury to craft their own personal style in a meaningful and creative manner, than the other pieces fall in place from this platform of self-knowledge. The best style is often resourceful and about doing more with less, or at least (re)discovering those things that you seem to love time and time again. This is why vintage clothing and accessories are so alluring – they have embedded stories to tell and typically are very well made. Given that I travel a lot and maintain three homes, I am very conscious of streamlining my possessions and also shopping locally to support design and sustainable economic growth in the places where I live with my family. In Bulgaria, for example, I try to do outreach work for cultural preservation and textile education so that traditions there are carried on and celebrated on both a local and global stage. I try to support young designers who are looking to do more work in sustainable fashion, and blogging often helps me to do this. I think that it is important for each individual to focus on what they can do, rather than relying in some of the umbrella ideas that are vital, but often postpone immediate action.

I love your style - what are your tips and tricks to be fashionable, stylish, but put sustainability as a priority? What makes the perfect, sustainable outfit?

The perfect sustainable outfit for me is something that you look and feel good in. Contemporary style really should incorporate an ethical edge, as it seems a bit behind the times to wear clothing and accessories where others have to pay the cost for luxury. We do not do this with food shopping, and we really should not consume clothing that is toxic to the environment or the livelihoods of garment workers or artisans. Not all of my clothes are eco-friendly in terms of fabrics or process, but I always try to shop with longevity in mind. I learned this from my husband, who selects quality-made goods that he anticipates being able to pass down to our boys. Then again, he is half-Italian and has always had a great sense of style.

You might not know this, but I have worked in corporate responsibility ever since I graduated- I see that big corporations are trying hard to be responsible, but that is not enough. How do you see big fashion corporations' responsibility in creating a sustainable world?

I really think corporations who are not addressing sustainability in some meaningful capacity are robbing the consumer of a future that we all share. A lot of grassroots efforts on the eco fashion frontier come from the designers themselves as well as consumers who want access to better design options. There are enough consumer advocate groups out there right now that with a little bit of research fashion lovers can learn about companies who are doing a responsible job with their current mission and long term roadmap for improving their production methods and sourcing strategies. Corporations need to be more transparent in what they do in order to gain the trust and money of consumers. We can make them do this by refusing to purchase products and goods that are not ethical, through and through.

What are your everyday routines to protect your world, your environment and make our society better?

I live pretty simply, despite the travel that I do a few times a year. I do not own a car nor do I drive around every day. I cook meals from scratch, support local farmers and growers as much as possible, and try to shop within my own neighborhood to keep small businesses operating. I also recycle as much as possible, and my artwork also incorporates these practices as most of the textile and fiber in my projects is recycled from the home. I am also an advocate for slowing life down so that we have the time to re-learn how to make things by hand as well as appreciate the beautiful objects in our lives.

Tell me about your work as an artist! What are you working on right now?

I have entered a wonderful new period with my work as my children are now close to four years old, and I am finally able to get back into several projects that I have had on the backburner for a while. Ironically, my career really took off during the first year that I had twins, i.e. I had my first museum exhibition, so I had to be creative about finding a way to care for my babies as well as get to some of this intricate textile work. The focus of upcoming projects revolves around ideas related to fiber and "fashioning self and the environment". Some of this will be site-specific work using fiber and indigenous vegetation in remote locations in Europe and the American Southwest. I am also working on a new "off-the-grid fashion" writing series that I cannot say much about at the moment. Folks can always learn more on e c c o * e c o as well as my artist blog.

What do you like the most about your job?

Definitely the amazing people who I get to share ideas with, tell stories about, and collaborate with. I also like the flexibility that I have to travel, live creatively, and craft a life for my family. I have had a lot of jobs in the past, but I really like being my own boss. I also love that my job brings me even closer to nature.

Many people here in Hungary are not really keen on living a sustainable lifestyle - what would be your advice for those who want to start with a few small steps?

I think that it is important to take small steps and do those things that are really achievable and meaningful in your immediate sphere. This could be something very poetic like trying to start a windowsill garden or repairing old clothes that you like but can no longer wear. Using one’s hands brings one closer to the source of a true existence. Buying green is not the only way to go green. I find that people in my neighborhood here in Bulgaria are living very sustainably in ways that are not necessarily trendy. For example, they till small patches of soil outside of their building, use the clothesline for drying garments, and certainly have small bundles of garbage that they take down to the street bins. Some times these bags are so tiny, and they obviously have been able to do this by buying food that does not come in packaging and at a higher cost. I also see the older generation canning lots of vegetables and preserves as well as mending textiles that they hang on their terraces. There is a grace to this way of living that is not about being able to afford eco-friendly clothing or design objects, but makes perfect sense for the environment and a life well lived. This, for me, is what sustainability is about.

What is the most useful piece of advice about sustainable style that you have ever gotten?

That’s an interesting question – probably a Shakespeare quote that my grandmother, an amazing seamstress, used to say, "To Thine Own Self Be True." Sustainable style, despite the global implications, is very much about knowing oneself and understanding one's personal style and needs as a way to craft a wardrobe and lifestyle. This can be an ongoing organic process and certainly does not come from the dictates of a fashion magazine. Glossies are for ideas, but true style comes from within.

I know you are a mother - how do you teach your children about sustainability?

Honestly, my children teach me quite a bit about sustainability. They have taught me how to play again, how to find or re-invent a seemingly mundane object, and certainly how to be present. We play together all of the time, and I always make a point of immersing them in nature as much a possible. Nature is the teacher. I am really there as a guide. I want them to be able to discover their own joys. I want them to be able to cultivate their own reverence for the natural world and the role that they will take in its preservation.

What are your future plans as an artist and as a blogger?

Honestly, I plan to blog a bit less during the remainder of 2011 so that I can work on art projects as well as longer writing assignments. Both of my blogs will serve as journals for these upcoming undertakings as well as highlighting the work of artists and designer who I want to continue to support. There might come a time when I merge my two blogs together under the general umbrella of "ideas about fashioning self and the environment" but I have not finished building the bridge for this just yet. I will also be working with a few new textile initiatives in 2011/12, so stay tuned for updates on this front as well. Thank you for sharing my ideas and inviting me to have this dialogue.

Hi world, what's up? I am feeling lucky sitting on my couch and listening to Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland, thinking about how busy I am and how I don't mind being busy at all.

Things have been rather crazy lately with work. I am right in the middle of working on different strategies now and wired from writing presentations and press releases when I should be sleeping. Life is full of ups and downs which I suppose makes everything more interesting. And overall, life is good. I've learned the fine art of not having enough time in the day but trying to do enough and not worrying about it. I am really glad summer is here because the season change always rejuvenates me.

I suppose there isn't really a deeper meaning to this entry other than to help me unwind after a long day of work. But then, just taking this moment to breath makes it all better and perhaps that is the deeper meaning here.

Oh summer, how I love thee! You, and summer clothes, shoes... and sunglasses of course! I truly love Tamara's designs, but I have a round face (*sigh*) and a big head (*sigh*), so wayfarer-type of sunnies do not work for me. I have always tought that Ray Bans were cool. "Gombold újra! Divat a magyar" ("Rebutton It- Hungarian is Fashionable") is a competition for Hungarian designers to rediscover and reconsider Hungarian folk motives using today's fashion ideas. The idea is gorgeous. The execution was not so gorgeous. I have some problems with the whole thing, including the fact that a free fashion event with strong media support is being held at the Museum of Fine Arts which is able to house 450 people. The problem was that they invited some 400 VIP guests. Go figure.

To my biggest disappointment, most of the collections were clichés with only a few fresh (and wearable) ideas. I leave the rest to Hungarian fashion critics- I am not one of them. That being said, I loved a few pieces from the ones that made it to the final round. One of my favorites was the accessory collection designed by two talented girls behind the brand The Béta Version. Their bags are stunning! Amazing design, inspired by the folk motives of traditional Hungarian hand-woven fabrics from different parts of the country, turned into pixels and punched into the leather and felt bags. Each bag is handmade of one single piece of leather, the sides of which can be stiched together, similarly to weaving. Fabulous, aren't they?

Dream into the new

Long time no see! I was busy organising my new life- but I am back. I missed you.

So, a new life. It was three weeks ago that I was laid off. My feelings were mixed, however, I had expected this for a long time. I just could not find my place. You probably do not remember this post- I wrote it such a long time ago, but have kept walking that way since then. I was moved by one of the comments left on the post and now I read it again:

"Your situation is common. There are as many artistic people with open minds and friendly hearts as there are people with pre-formulated opinions and hearts that open only for a few. You represent what they don't have and cannot ever have. Others may become upset when they see universal love, acceptance and curiosity in your eyes. They may feel insulted because you can love yet they cannot. So, hold your head up! Be proud that you carry a candle wherever you go. Protect it, and be happy when you get smiles back."

Now I understand that it was not my place in this world. I keep searching for it, but I am a lot happier now.

It was three weeks ago that I was laid off. It was three weeks ago that I met Tamara. She let me in her world and I instantly felt better. We talked a lot and she shared her thoughts on staying true to yourself. I know now that this might be the most important thing in life, and the best thing you can do to your soul.

About Tamara: Tamara Barnoff is a multimedia artist living in Budapest since 2004 {and she speaks perfect Hungarian!}. She graduated from the J. Nikoladze College of Arts, School of Painting in 1995 in Tbilisi and finished her MS degree in Fasgion Design from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 2001. Alongside her private clients, she works in fashion, film and theatre.

She is such a great artist! I have two Barnoff dresses and I wear them a lot- they are comfortable, beautiful and interesting at the same time. Also, I got a beautiful necklace from Tamara- as a birthday present! Thank you, Tamara, you are the bestest. <3

Steel Sculptures

You all know I love minimalism, so no wonder I fell in love with Adel Kovacs's new collection. Adel has been one of my favorite Hungarian designers for a long time now. Her minimalist but surprising ideas and the perfect execution of her pieces are breathtaking.

The SS 2011 collection is inspired by constructivist-minimalist sculptures hidden in a park of Adel's hometown. Extended flat surfaces, the relationship between shape and volume, interaction of steel and concrete are the ideas behind the silhouettes of the garments. The concept is reduction, emphasising the simplicity and smoothness of textile by removing decoration. Using attributes of the material like flexibility and foldability, the details are created with care. Just as nature revives the statues, the geometrical shapes of the garments are brought to life by the human body, unfolding our personality.*

Their collections, continuous photo exhibitions and exclusive fashion events make the showroom one of the most important places of the Budapest fashion scene. I fell in love again. Ágnes Nóra Szimon, the designer behind the brand Zoe Phobic stole my heart with her new collection, BITE. Well, this was not the first time she did it. BITE stands for "Born in the Eighties"- she used the most distinctive materials, colors, forms of the era (like the "Madonna Look") and created a youthful, fresh and cheerful collection.

Oh, I love 80s fashion! The clothes worn in the 80s depicted people who were trying to find themselves. They looked for ways to express their creativity and individuality. For some, the 80s were a great time. The creation of MTV revolutionized fashion, the music industry and even how we watched TV. For others, it was nothing but bad hair, worse clothing and music that often had more to do with machines than talent. I take the former approach and relish the excess and outrageous fashions that the 80s managed to make mainstream. The BITE collection brings all the playfulness, expression and creativity that I love about 80s fashion but with a new approach: it is clean, refined and well-cut.

My first spring piece for this year will be a Posent dress from the plus size collection and the nude blazer from the new one. Local designer clothing, tailor-made on reasonable prices- this combination makes me happy. What do you think?

My new, favorite thing to keep myself warm is my new dress from one of my favorite Hungarian designer brands, Souffle. Boglárka Virág, the designer behind the brand is not only a very talented girl but oh-so-sweet too. She graduated from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design Budapest, majoring in knitted materials and fashion design. And the dress... absolutely stunning! The exhibition "Canned Candies: The Nudes of Jean Clemmer" launched last week at the new pop-up art space Flash Projects in London. "The collaboration between Jean Clemmer and Paco Rabanne was one of the greatest fashion moments of the 1960s," says Christabel Armsden, director of Flash Projects. Photographer Jean Clemmer and fashion designer Paco Rabanne worked together on the book, Nues, which came out in 1969 in Paris and went on to obtain a cult status.*

It is really fascinating to look at these erotic photographs that were really controversial at the time and compare them to the exaggeratedly sex-obsessed, agressive editorials of our age. I find them touchingly innocent and strikingly beautiful. What do you think?

To my greatest surprise, one of my favorite collections was the one presented by Emilio Pucci. I am not a big fan of Pucci, however, I totally acknowledge the freshness the brand brought to fashion back in the day. And now? I am totally obsessed.

Hey, lovelies, how have you been lately? I do not want to start again with my stories of being stressed out and tired with lots of work and stuff... I realized that this blog is means a lot to me, so I have to make time for it. I will. I do not wish to promise anything like one post per day, but I will try my best to post as much as possible and get back to your my favorite blogs too.

Anyway, on to the interesting stuff! I am amazed by the concept behind this editorial called "Identity". I love meaningful fashion photography, and this one tells a story that fascinates me.

"This is a chronicle progression of a woman. A woman who morphs from innocence to struggles, and back to innocence. From a state of purity, when there is no good and bad, to sophistication, which comes with seduction, greed, debauchery amongst all other evils that dominate the world. On the verge of decadence she struggles, for individuality, for virtue, for her own soul. In the end amidst all chaos, she unites with peace of mind, living with a sober fact that she is just one of them, and she can't hide. That is her IDENTITY, whether she likes it or not."

Eat my heart out

Oh, this has been a crazy summer! Busy, busy, busy but fun. I am so happy I am still able to post, even if not on a daily basis. This blog has changed my life. I found new friends (I love you, girls) and met amazing people, learned a lot about my style, got a lot more confident about how I dress and look. It has been an amazing journey and I am still walking the way. It makes me genuinely happy and I thank you for that. Your support and love mean a lot to me.

My blog and my journey also helped me with getting to know some fabulous Hungarian designers, one of them being Nanushka. Do you remember Sandra? She is such a nice girl and a very talented designer too. I love the beautiful simplicity of her clothes, shoes and bags. I obtained my first Nanushka pieces recently and I am in love. What do you think?

I am a Chanel lover and except for a few pieces (um... clogs? no, thanks) I love Monsieur Lagerfeld's work. Not that I can afford them though.

You probably remember my dilemma about wedges. I still have it. To be honest, I bought this pair of Chanels just because they were sold at a bargain price I could not resist. I did not like them on the photos so much, but as soon as I put my hands on and my feet in them, I was in love. What do you think? (I am corrupt, I know. It is like "Wedges? No, thanks. Chanel? Yes, please.". I cannot help it.)

He is a genius. Singapore based designer, Max. Tan has created something spectacular. Again. I love how he uses simple ideas to create new, breathtaking, androgynous silhouettes. "Maximizing on minimalistic ideas, proportions are sometimes blown out of proportions," he says.

Titled "Against", his new, a/w 2010 collection "pushes the boundaries of what is deemed right and wrong. It challenges how garments can be differently constructed, how "wrong" details and tailoring methods can be deemed to seem right. Strict sharp lines and proper drafting rules are thrown out the window. Combined with draping techniques, the sumptuous use of fabrics put together a monochromatic collection filled with international accidents made aesthetically "right". What’s unseen is now seen, what was once wrong is now made right."

Once again, Max. Tan worked together with my favorite team @ the Test Shoot Gallery to create an amazing lookbook.

Hello stranger

This is the second time that Dior collaborates with the talented Chinese photographer Quentin Shih. The photos of the series called "Stranger in the Glass Box" are amazing. This time the label called upon the photographer to produce a series of images for the shop windows of the Dior boutique to be re-opened in Shanghai. By retouching his subjects, Shih creates oil painting-style images using Chinese stereotypes to reinforce the rigor and uniformity of Chinese mass culture. "Shanghai Dreamers" became one of my favorite series of images. What do you think?

Flying with the wind

Dóri Tomcsányi's s/s 2010 (graduate) collection has been inspired by illusion. The sense of delusion is created by transparent, printed surfaces, applications and the cuts of the pieces. The colors used include light earth colors and powder pink for women; and dark earth colors and dark turquoise for men. The collection includes an oddly cut men's jacket, a masculinely cut women's jacket, a sweater with color defects and a skintight dress made of powder pink leather.

I love-love-love the feeling these pieces give me- light, clean and beautifully cut. What do you think?

I have discovered the creative universe of the late Dash Snow (1981-2009) recently. I fell madly in love with his harsh, brutally honest, often uncomfortable images covering sex, drugs, poverty and anti-social behavior, giving these some kind of intimacy that came from his lifestyle and personal affection. Explore his work and life here, here and here. The last piece was partly written by another favorite artist of mine, the genius that is Ryan McGinley.

MAC for Rodarte: raising awareness?

I love Rodarte. I love MAC. I wrote about their collaboration on Sminkblog a few days ago without being aware of the emerging debate on Temptalia.com. Christine is a great blogger and she allowed an open debate on her site without censoring negative comments on MAC. To be honest, I was not fully aware of the tragedy that affects the life of thousands of Mexican women in Juarez until Christine posted the following two statements from MAC and Rodarte about changing the product names in the collection. They intended to call their nail polishes "Juarez" and "Factory", and they gave the name "Bordertown" to one of the eyeshadows.

We understand that product names in the MAC Rodarte collection have offended our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We continue to listen carefully to the comments we have received and have the following plans to address concerns:

We are committed to donating USD 100,000 to a non-profit organization that has a proven, successful track-record helping women in need and that can directly improve the lives of women in Juarez in a meaningful way.

We are changing the product names in the MAC Rodarte collection.

We recognize that the violence against women taking place in Juarez needs to be met with proactive action. We never inteded to make light of this serious issue and we are truly sorry.

Our makeup collaboration with MAC developed from inspirations from a road trip that we took in Texas last year, from El Paso to Marfa. The ethereal nature of this landscape influenced the creative development and desert palette of the collection. We are truly saddened about injustice in Juarez and it is a very important issue to us. The MAC collaboration was intended as a celebration of the beauty of the landscape and people in the areas that we traveled.

In a way, this shows me how powerful the Internet and blogs have become, on the other hand though, I am not sure what that really means. I watched this video and it made me cry. I read all the comments and I tend to agree with some readers who say that this makes people aware of the tragedy in Juarez as it made me aware of it. Some say that high fashion and makeup are not the appropriate way to comment on these type of problems, but I do not agree with that. Raising awareness with the tools at our hands- that is important.

The Mulleavy sisters' a/w 2010 collection was based on the same trip and exploring their Mexican roots. I really feel that their work is a commentary on the violence without "glamorizing" it. Some critics, however, say that they capitalizing on human misery without offering up real critique. What do you think?

Dóra Mojzes is one of my favorite Hungarian designers. She is innovative, interesting and cool. Oh, she is nice-nice-nice too. Her 2010 s/s collection is based on the BUG, which is a piece of jewelry that is made using the origami technique and contains a digital thermometer sensor. When switched on, the BUG flashes every thirty seconds and reflects light that changes its color depending on the temperature. It is available in the forms of a Hercules beetle and a stag-beetle. This collection contains basic pieces like vests, t-shirts, leggings and lightweight summer dresses.

The BUG has been invented by Bence Ádám Kiss. He contacted Dóra with the idea of a cooperation, which materialized in the form of an origami bug that functions as a pin brooch.

I have been pretty much into photography lately. I love blurry, extended exposure shots, they give me the time to think, to rethink, to relax and dive into the beauty of art. I am not a fan of much color, but I have been totally blown away by Benjamin Lennox's photographic style. What do you think? Just lay back and enjoy the moment.

Retro chic

Resort collections are mostly very wearable and effortless; probably because they are not so significant in numbers, so designers do not have the stress they do when designing their other collections. I usually like these pieces a lot. The trend this year seems to be retro- what do you think?

Hey, lovelies, I hope you all have a beautiful Monday! I am back to the blogsphere and back to visiting your amazing blogs- and boy does it feel great! While away, I forgot about my first bloggy birthday! Can you believe it? Happy belated birthday to me and to the sugar diaries! We will celebrate with a giveaway soon.

Now onto the interesting stuff- I have wanted to post the latest, mini collection of Anna Daubner, a young, Hungarian fashion designer for a long time now. She graduated from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and launched her label in 2010. I love the fairy tale-like, but still sophisticated look of her designs. What do you think?
